A talk aimed at mathematicians, where I explain the connection between the Cohn+Elkies bounds on sphere packings and the modular bootstrap bounds on conformal field theories. Viazovska’s magic functions can be recovered from analytic extremal functionals, introduced to prove sharp bounds in the conformal bootstrap.
